Have a model 336 35rem jw with 16 1/2 to 17in barrel

Post by Leewright001 »

Looking for some info on my gun. I have been looking everywhere and have not found another one like it. It's a older 35rem not sure how old it is but its has the JW on barrel and the barrel is short 16 and half to 17 in. I have never seen one that short on a 35 rem. The serial number is AD30312 if any knows anything about this gun can you please let me know.. Thanks.

The 16 1/4 inch barrel was available on the Model 336 Marauder from 1963 to 1964. Your Model 336 with the "AD" serial number prefix was made in 1968, so it is not an original Marauder as produced by the Marlin Firearms Company. At one time, there were a number of Marauder barrels available from Numrich Gun Parts Corporation, and many Model 336's got the short barrels, in some cases to make fake Marauders as they were not made in large quantities and are collectors items today.
The barrel marking is JM, for John Marlin, not JW. It is the proof mark used by Marlin almost from the beginning (1889). Before that, it was only the letter "M" in a circle.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Yes thank u. I dont know why I said jw its jm.. I got it on a trade and I have never seen one with barrel that short. From the tip to where it goes in the receiver its little over 16 1/2 so I guess from the tip to past the threads would put it at 17in. Yes the date 1968 I figured that out So are you saying you think someone changed the barrel on it or was it made like this with the short barrel.. Thanks for the help I'm still learning with the older guns

I guess we should determine if your rifle has a straight grip stock or a pistol grip stock before determining anything else. Otherwise, the only barrel length in 1968 was the 20 inch long barrel for the Model 336 Texan, which had a straight grip stock, like the real Marauder guns had.
The pistol grip stock guns had either a 20 inch barrel (336C or RC) and the 336 A or ADL had 24 inch barrels.
Someone did change your barrel, or cut it off. Would need to look at the end of the barrel to see how it is finished.

A barrel length of 17" would indicate to me it's been shortened. Not a length Marlin offered.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
