More Model 1889 Problems

Post by BFRieck »

My just relined Model 1889 now won't eject shells very well (most of the time not at all). I shot it quite a bit (at least a box of 50) while determing that it was shot out, but never an ejection problem. I got it back from being relined and now it won't eject. Does that have something to do with the relining or is it just coincidental? Also, is that a chronic problem with 1889's and how does one fix it?

Thanks for any help.

That is definitely not a chronic problem of any Marlin lever action design, and especially the 1889's.
A couple questions before and answer. Does it extract the cases? If so, do they simply extract, but wont kick clear of the receiver? If they wont extract, then the problem might be onen of two things; either the extractor is broken, or the cut in the barrel was not recut after the liner was installed. This would cause the extractor to ride up on the barrel liner, and not catch the rim to extract the empty.
If it extracts, but wont kick clear, then either the ejector is missing, or the spring, or ejector is broken. When you open the lever, look inside the opening of the bolt, and see if the extractor is on the opposite side, and is in the "raised" position. It should protrude enough to catch the rim, and throw the case clear.
If the cut wasn't made in the new liner, I'd return it to the gunsmith to finish the job properly. He should have checked the gun for function before returning it to you. That would be part of any barrel reline by most gunsmiths.
Hope this helps.

I just had a brand new Uberti 1873 with the extractor cut not deep enough and it had the same problem, the extractor couldn't catch the case rim. The relining guy should have checked it. You can fix it with a file in a couple minutes, but you almost have to remove the barrel to do it properly. The 1889 is one of the most reliable lever actions ever made. Broken firing pins are about the only thing that I usually encounter on old ones. Sometimes the lever latch spring goes to heck on them, but that is an easy fix too.
