model 1893 repair
I have dads old 1893 in 38-55 which is in reasonably good condition. The bluing is less than great but overall good. The stock is cracked from a butt stroke to a buck made by my dad back in late 1940's. What is best way to maintain value of this firearm? Do I go for the best repair possible to the butt or have Marlin do a factory replace and/or restore?
Stock cracks are not a difficult fix. In improving a firearm recently, I had good results cleaning the break with an old toothbrush and acetone. After it had thoroughly dried, I applied 'gorilla glue' and clamped tightly, using pieces of lath as vice pads. The lines of the crack are scarcely visible now.
Other options include buying a recently-made replacement stock or having your present stock duplicated and hand fitted. SW

By the way Jerry, Marlin does not work on these out of production guns. I would agree with Steve, it's best to fix your gun's stock, rather than replace it. Acraglass works wonders on stock cracks too. If possible, try to open the crack up, to allow more adhesive to penetrate deep into the crack. Don't wedge anything into the crack, but if you can pry it open with fingertip pressure, it will help make a sturdier repair.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
