Model 1889 Barrel Stamp
My in-laws have a model 1889 that is marked 38 W on the top of the barrel, but the bore is clearly larger than 38 and appears to be 44 cal. Did Marlin allow guns to leave the factory with mis-stamped barrels?

Re: Model 1889 Barrel Stamp
Dave S. The 38 W. is the same as the 38 W.C.F. it is just the 44-40 necked down
to 40 caliber not 38 caliber as a lot of people tend to think. In most cases the first
numbers of the old Black Powder cartridges are the calibers but for some reason
Winchester named this cartridge backwards?. So you are right about it being a
larger caliber than a 38 it is really a 40 caliber round.

Thanks, Marlin 1893. Do you know of any other cartridge that reverses the caliber-first, blackpowder-charge-size-second convention?
