1889 forearm removal

Post by BFRieck »

Can someone out there help me with the removal of the forearm on my Model 1889? I understand that I only need to (1) remove the screw that runs through the loading tube at the front and into the dovetail fitting attached to the underside of the barrel, (2) remove the two screws that attach the barrel band to the dovetail fixture in the middle of the barrel. Thereupon, I should be able to swing the forearm down from the front and slip it out of the action at the rear, and remove the loading tube by sliding it forward out of the action. However, after I remove all the screws, nothing is loose. Does it just need some persuading or have I missed a fastener or two? BTW, I disassembled the rest of the action with no trouble. None of the screws were rusted or the least bit difficult to remove and everything went back together smoothly. What am I doing wrong?

Once you have taken the screw out of the top of the mag tube you need to pull it off the post that the tube goes over and the screw goes into. If it has not been off for a few years I will cover a flat blade of a screwdriver and press it in between the mag tube and barrel to get it started. Go easy.

Be sure to slide the forearm cap forward an inch or so, before prying the mag tube off it's base! Then the whole assembly will drop down, and come off together!
Use a putty knife between the barrel and mag tube to assist in lowering it. Works better than a screwdriver!

Thanks, everyone. I'll try that. Even after the forearm cap is slid forward, the forearm is tight, perhaps prying the mag tube down will take care of that problem without prying on the wood itself. This forum is a great resource!

Okay, got the forearm off. The putty knife worked well, and the mag tube brought the forearm right down. Thanks for all the help.
