When did Marlin change ......??

Post by droptine9 »

Hi, wondering a few things, on the Marlin Model 336, starting in 1948 with the first model, they were made with solid top receivers with NO drilled holes for a scope mount. Also they made them with the grooved lines on top.
What year did they start drilling factory holes on the 336 for scope mounts, and what year did they stop making the grooved top receiver?

Also when did they start putting on the grip caps on the 336 stocks? I prefer the old style with no grip cap on the 336.

I am somewhat of a purest and when looking at purchasing an old Marlin I want them original, not all drilled and cut. 8)

The top of the receivers were first drilled and tapped for scopes in 1956. I believe that's the same year the changed the tops to smooth finish.
Checked through my old Marlin catalogs, and it appears the grip cap first shows in the catalogs in 1957.
It's always good to stay with unaltered guns, but it's not a problem if a gun is D&T for a scope, as long as it's factory.

Marlinman is correct on the years for the tapping of the receiver and the grip cap. The last year they grooved the top of the receiver was 1952, "J" prefix. In 1953, "K" prefix, they changed to the matted top for glare reduction.
