Post by SLUMLORD »

I BOUGHT A MARLIN PUMP 12 GUAGE AT A AUCTION LAST WEEK AND NEED SOME INFORMATION ON IT.
ON THE BARREL IT SAYS MARLIN FIREARMS CO AND HAS THREE PATENT DATES NOV 6 1894, MAY 12 1896 AND JUNE 2 1896.
SN 49632
THIS WEAPON HAS A EXPOSED HAMMER.
CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT MODEL IT IS

Slumlord;

You have acquired a Marlin Model 1898, exposed hammer pump action, 12 gauge shotgun. The Model 1898 is a takedown action with a pistol grip stock. This shotgun was made from 1898 to 1905 in 4 different versions. You have the standard or "A" grade version. It left the factory in March of 1903 with a 30 inch barrel. In case you are wondering about the other number stamped on the bottom of the barrel, it should be 51180. The barrel numbers never match the receiver number.
I hope this helps.

THANK YOU, THIS INFORMATION HELPS A LOT.
THERE WERE 160 GUNS AT THIS AUCTION, I THOUGHT I HAD DIED AND GONE TO HEAVEN. MY SON PICKED UP A NEW COLT CAR-A3 HBAR ELITE FOR $800 AND THERE WAS A REMINGTON MODEL 2 38CAL ROLLING BLOCK THAT WENT FOR OVER TWO GRAND. I PAID $125 FOR THIS MODEL 98.

Go to this site and you will find instructions for testing the safeties on the 1898 shotgun.
