Model 24 engraved

Post by bob kotch »

I found a model 24 that the gun shop owner tells me is grade 5 style " the highest engraving possible". It is less than 50% coverage. I looked in Brophy and it looks more like grade 3. There were two birds on the panel and a bit of scroll. No barrel engraving. Any one ever see grade 5 engraving on a shotgun? I also disbelieve that grade 5 is the most ornate.

Bob;

Where is Brophy's book did you see a shotgun engraved in the Grade 3 style? Marlin shotguns were designated Grade C and Grade D. From the sound of the gun described, it is a Grade C.
Numbers 1 through 15 engraving was pretty much limited to the lever action rifles, and can be found on some pump action rifles. There are a very few shotguns engraved in the style of these styles, but they are extremely rare and are usually gold inlaid when you do find them. I know of one engraved in the Number 15 pattern, and a couple in Grade 40 patterns.
Turn to page 372 to see descriptions of the Grade C and D engraving and guns.
I hope this helps.
