Marlin Safety ID

Post by jameybaliint »

I was gifted a Marlin Safety 32 20 and am looking to get any historical info that might available. It has a 24 inch octagonal barrel with serial number 191358. It has an elliptical buttstock and a tang sight. I can’t find a model number anywhere near the hammer, but the action is stuck open for some reason so it might be obscured. There are several patent years stamped on the top of the barrel beginning with Oct 11, 1887. Any help identifying the model number and year of manufacture would be appreciated.

Jameybaliint;

You have a Marlin Model 1894 that was shipped from the factory in New Haven, Ct. in 1900. The model marking will be on the upper tang, behind the hammer, beneath the tang mounted sight.
You might get by, by removing the lever. Take out the lever screw and pull the lever out of the lower tang. Then see if you can close the breech bolt by pushing it in. If it goes in, then re-insert the lever and screw and see if that has taken care of the problem.. If not, then do the following.
Remove the buttstock, loosen the hammer spring and move the spring out to the side, then remove the hammer screw in the left side of the receiver, then the screw on the lower tang up by the forearm. Pull the lower tang out from the receiver with the lever in place. Close the breech bolt, remove the lever screw and lever from the lower tang and then re-insert the lower tang without the lever. Re-install the hammer screw and lower tang screw that was up by the forearm. Re-insert the lever, engaging the breech bolt and install the lever screw. Move the hammer spring back under the hammer and tighten the hammer spring screw and re-install the butt stock and screw. It should work now.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thank you very much for the info. I removed the lever and got everything back together, but it still locks open. For now, it will remain a conversation piece. Are there other good sources to research the history behind this particular model? Wikipedia is limited and I’m new at the antique firearm game.
