need help...

Post by andy b »

I inherited a marlin 22 several years ago, and need some info.

it has the following on the barrel: "Pat'd jan 18.1887, april2. 1889, aug. 12.1890, mar.1.1892"

it has a hex barrel with the breech being a "marbalized bluing"

a SN of 212047 is located on the bottom of the breech

it has a flip up peep sight, and tubular magazine.

I have no idea what the model number is. Can anyone give me any info on this rifle?

Thanks

Andy

Appears to be a 1900 manufacture by serial number. A model 1892, it followed the 1891 Model and was available in 22 or 32 caliber. It had a one piece trigger which reduced the trigger wiggle of the 1891 and had a base piece on the firing pin so it couldn't be fired except when the lever was fully closed. Its actual production started in 1895 and continued untill 1915. The standard barrel was round or octagon 24" however, other lengths were available by special order.

Andy B;

Does your rifle breakdown with a large thumbscrew on the right side of the receiver? It should as you have a Marlin Model 1897. The patent dates you list were used on three different .22 caliber Marlin lever action rifles. The Model 1891 (2nd variation), Model 1892 and Model 1897. Remove the tang sight, and you will find the model number stamped on the upper tang.
I hope this helps.
