Marlin 62 levermatic 20" barrel ?

Post by hunter6657 »

I just picked up a Marlin levermatic 62 in 30 carbine at a pawnshop today for the princely sum of $190 out the door,in about 85% condition..
This particular model has a 20" barrel and I am wondering how rare this barrel length is?

Also, I am wondering if there is a source for magazines for this rifle
Any information would be appreciated.

(From what I understand from posting on MarlinOwners board, the .30 carbine models all came with 20" barrels.)

What kind of accuracy can I expect out of this gun and any problems associated with the gun as far as mechanics, etc?

Like the folks at MarlinOwners, I have not seen a 30 Carbine model 62 with other than a 20" barrel. Which would indicate they are not rare.

Just a few under 8000 of these were made, and a FEW will be found lacking a serial number. I wouldn't actually call a 30 cal Model 62 w/o a serial number rare, but you don't see them everyday, either.

Try e-gunparts.com for 30 cal magazines. I've seen someone offering tham not long ago. Turn your favorite search engine loose on "Marlin model 62 magazines for sale" and see what you get.

As for accuracy, I'd try original issue ammo first. With groups from those cartridges as a guide, begin experimenting with various handloads to see if any improvements can be found. The first place I'd look for accurate handloads is in "Pet Loads" by Mr. Waters.

The Levermatics can be tricky to re-assemble after taking clear apart. So much so that I would not take one clear down unless there was a compelling reason to do so. I've only done it once and hope to never accomplish it again!

The price you mention is very favorable! :D SW

I got a line on about 5 boxes of remington softpoints for $15/box, otherwise they are 24.95 at academy and FMJ's are 20/box at walmart.
I'll prob reload to save ammo costs and to be able possibly try some spitzer bullets in it or try the 100 grain plinker bullets. I beleive all the 30 carbine rifles had serial numbers as they were made in the last 3 years of manufacture in 1966-69. This should be a fun gun to shoot and will make a good companion to my Marlin 1894C .357 rifle., along with my winchester trappers in 357 and 44 mag.

One thing I do sometimes to FMJ's is put a small flat on the nose of the bullet to make them into small game bullets that hit harder but still dont tear big holes in the hides of predators. Kinda like that small game bullet tool I have for the 22 LR.
God created man, Colonel Colt made him equal.
