I picked up this Marlin model of 1881 as part of an estate collection I purchased.
Serial number dates it to 1886. The barrel is just shy of 24", not sure if it was ordered that way or if it was cut down.
A couple of questions for the experts
1. What is the significance of the sling/saddle loop/ring ahead of the lever. Is it custom or a rare factory option?
2. What is this worth?
Thanks

I have never seen a sling hanger like that. I would say it was added and not factory. Photo of front sight would be nice.

Tincanbandit;
The factory records show that this Marlin Model 1881 left the factory in late 1886 with a 28 inch octagon barrel. Model 1881 barrels will always measure the exact length, i.e. a 28 inch barrel measures 28 inches, no more, no less, same with any other original factory barrel length.
Looking at your photos, the front sight is to close to the end of the barrel. Another good indication the barrel has been shortened.
The sling attachment is not factory either.

Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Thanks, so how much do you suppose the shortened barrel affects the value?
Re: Marlin Model of 1881
Yes it does, big time, it’s value is for a shooter if the bore is good.

Re: Marlin Model of 1881
I'd estimate it deducts 20-25% from the value of an exact same gun with original length barrel.
Marlin lever actions 1870's-WWI, Ballards, and single shot rifles!
