Post by buckndee »

New member hear, have an oppertunity to purchase this rifle for $2500 out the door.

1897 date of Manufacture serial number 2617.

Approximate value for this 98% gun please. Great case colors, pistol grip and tang sight.

Buckndee;

With a serial number like that, it really cannot be a Model '97 unless there is a letter prefix in front of the serial number. It sounds more like a Model 39 which fits your description. You would need to remove the tang sight to see the actual model designation.
Even if this is a Model 39, with your condition description, it sounds like a fair price.
Due to the increasing cost of ammunition, there will be no warning shot!

Will go back on the 18th to do a more serious inspection. Dearler told me the serial number, didn't pay attention myself was drooling over the gun.

Buckndee;

Another way to tell if it is a Model 39 is the barrel marking. Even the early Model 39's were marked Marlin Firearms Corporation on the first line and New Haven, Conn. -Patented- on the second line.
The early Model 39 had the serial number stamped up near the forearm, it was later that the serial number was moved back, under the lever.
I have a lower numbered 39 and it has the serial number up near the forearm and the barrel is marked as above.
